Adaptive math and language-arts practice for middle schoolers, built on two findings the learning-science literature settled decades ago: interleaving and spaced repetition. The research is public domain. Somebody just had to implement it.

What it does
The science, actually implemented
- Interleaved problem sets Mixing skills within a session beats massing one skill at a time. The research is old; the products ignore it. We don’t.
- Spacing that beats forgetting to the punch Each skill resurfaces right before it would fade, so review lands when it does the most good instead of when the calendar says “Unit 4.”
- Difficulty that adapts per-skill A kid can be strong on fractions and shaky on comma rules at the same time. smrtr adapts to each skill, not to a per-kid label.
- The ten-second parent digest What’s solid, what’s shaky, and what to ask about at dinner — readable in the time it takes to set the table.
- No coins, no pets, no casino mechanics Mastery is the reward loop. Getting visibly better at something turns out to be motivating on its own.
Why it exists
The research is free. The products ignore it.
The incumbent practice apps drill to the test with 2010-era UX and a gem economy bolted on top. Kids learn to grind for the next chest; parents learn that the dashboard is where numbers go to be reassuring. Neither has much to do with whether anything was actually retained.
Meanwhile, the learning science — interleaving, spaced retrieval, per-skill adaptation — has been sitting in the public domain, replicated and mostly unimplemented, for longer than our users have been alive. smrtr is our attempt to close that gap: practice that adapts faster than a middle schooler can get bored of it, which we acknowledge is an ambitious benchmark.
